TIPS TO TURN CHILDREN INTO READERS Suggestions for adults who read to children in the Windsor Public Library's Book Buddy program may be helpful to parents and other caregivers, as well. Consider the following when reading to children: - Speak distinctly and expressively when reading, clearly enunciating words and sounds. - Choose books with rhyme, repetition, and a controlled vocabulary. - Talk about the book before reading it or having the child read it. Look at the cover with the child, read the title and ask the child questions about previous experiences related to the book's content. - Stop at key points in the story to ask what the child thinks will happen next. Stop later to confirm predictions. - Discuss why events did or did not turn out as predicted in the story. Tips to help children read aloud - The following suggestions from the Book Buddy program at the Windsor Public Library may offer tips for parents and other caregivers when children read aloud to adults. - If the child has difficulty reading a word there are several things that you and the child can do: - Have the child look at the picture to get a hint of what the word might be. -Have the child sound out the word. - Have the child think of a word that might make sense in that place. - Have the child continue reading the sentence and then go back to fill in the word. - Tell the child what the word is so he or she does not lose the meaning of the story. - After listening to the story, have the child re-tell the story in his or her own words. |
